What makes a homeowner decide that it’s time to replace their windows? And once the decision is made to replace windows, how do they know that they’re getting the right product?

“Talk to your remodeler or consult a windows expert,” suggests Bill Elder, Sales Manager for Parr Lumber Company’s Windows Division. “By getting their recommendations, you can make your replacement window choices from an informed point of view.” Bill proudly points out that the window sales staff at Parr has an average of 19.5 years in the window industry, Bill leading them all with 32 years.

Vinyl is now the most popular choice when selecting replacements. Vinyl windows retain their appearance with relatively little cleaning and maintenance. And with vinyl’s “self-lubricating” properties and its resistance to warping and swelling, vinyl easily maintains its operability. Vinyl windows can also be cut to the exact dimensions of current window openings, making them ideal for the remodeling project.

That’s not to say that wood windows or windows made of other materials don’t have their place in the remodeling world. While requiring a bit more maintenance, many believe that nothing can top the rich beauty of a wooden window frame. Parr recommends clad wood exteriors where the wood is clad in metal, vinyl, or fiberglass. Wood windows also provide natural insulating qualities, thanks to the numerous pores and pits found in wood that trap air, creating an insulating barrier. And with the advances made in materials, replacing older windows with quality wood windows can create a more energy efficient home.

Bill also points out that there are continual advances being made in the construction of windows. One such advancement is “low maintenance glass.” Cardinal, one of the predominant suppliers of window glass in the industry, produces the Lo Ez-Plus series of glass that not only sheds water and grime, but, depending upon the selected glass, provides a variety of insulating qualities, increasing the energy efficiency of windows.

Options for people wanting to make their older homes more energy efficient while maintaining the home’s style was difficult, especially if located in a historical area of town. Vinyl clad wood windows now provide more traditional styles and details including such things as mortise-and-tenon joints and wood jamb liner. “Andersen Windows now offers their Woodwright double-hung windows, targeting the new luxury home or renovation projects,” comments Elder. “It’s just one of the choices available for those trying to maintain the elegance and charm of a more traditionally styled home, while trying to improve the home’s energy efficiency.”

According to Bill, with the growth of the Internet and the accessibility of information, many homeowners undertaking a remodeling project or replacing windows throughout their home are becoming more knowledgeable about the choices available to them. They know that the replacement windows will not only complement their home and increase its energy efficiency, but will increase its resale value as well.

Parr Lumber Company offers a wide selection from some of the top window manufacturers available. From vinyl to clad wood to traditional wooden windows, Parr Lumber Company is sure to have what you need.
