First Impressions...

By Jennifer Swick

We’ve all heard how important first impressions can be. For that reason, we take great care in how we present ourselves to make sure we are projecting an image that is “true” or possibly a little better than the truth. But, how many times are people getting their first impression of you BEFORE they meet you? Maybe their first impression is the message on your answering machine or a knock on your front door. We’re going to focus on your front door.

Enhancing your home’s curb appeal and enhancing your home’s front door appeal are two different things…. the front door is intimate; it’s up close and personal. If someone is knocking at your front door, they are going to be standing there for several seconds waiting and looking.

Now you can give a big impression with an item that traditionally has been quite unimpressive — your screen door. Like many people, I had the same screen door for a few too many years. Although it was a bit tattered and didn’t hang quite right, I still loved opening up the windows and doors on a spring or summer day to let the breeze waft through the house. Unfortunately, in the Northwest that only happens for a few short months each year. The other ten months of the year we are stuck listening to the banging of a screen door that we aren’t using and ignoring the fact that it has become a nuisance and an eyesore.

A retractable screen door is a great solution — here’s what Parr Lumber has to offer:

The Mirage
The Mirage retractable screens make conventional door screens a thing of the past. The unique design allows the screens to retract into its own compact aluminum housing allowing the screen to remain virtually out of sight when not in use.

Mirage door screens can be made to fit almost any door application including in- swing or out-swing doors, patio doors, entrance doors, and French double doors. Door heights up to 110” and door widths up to 55” are available. In addition to 6 standard colors, Mirage also offers custom matched colors.

The Mirage Limited Lifetime Warranty is the best warranty on the market. Mirage offers a one-year warranty on parts and labor and a lifetime warranty on all parts for the roller screen (except the screen material) under normal wear and tear. This is not a “do-it-yourself” product, all Mirage screens are factory installed to ensure performance and complete satisfaction.

The Breeze
Just as the name implies, The Breeze Do-It-Yourself Retractable Door Screen is a breeze to install. Three easy installation steps, that’s it. The Breeze fits standard doors up to 36” wide, adjustable top track allows for 1” of height adjustment. The Breeze is available in model 79-80, which fits 79” to 80” openings and model 80-81 which fits 80” to 81” openings. The Breeze is available in white, other colors are also available by special-order. And, like the Mirage, The Breeze also comes with a limited lifetime warranty.

I can tell you first hand that a new retractable screen door has been well worth the investment. I live in a neighborhood where every house looks pretty much the same and it’s a great way to set my house apart. I opted for the Mirage factory-installed screen door — it was a little more expensive than The Breeze, but I avoided adding one more item to my “do-it-myself” list.
