Dustless Wood Floor Sanding

By Susan Rich

Wouldn’t it be nice to have your hardwood floors re-sanded — with no dust left behind?

Matt Sellens, owner of Portland, OR-based Perpetua Wood Floors, offers customers just that. Using specially designed equipment, Sellens and his crew can sand a new or existing wood floor without leaving a whiff of dust behind.

“It’s fairly new technology,” he says. Think of it as an elaborate vacuum system that draws all the dust generated by the sanding through a precisely designed filtration unit and into a sealed container.

How well does it work? “On one of our jobs, we didn’t have to take any clothes off the wall,” he says. “It’s so effective the work can be done without removing any home furnishings.”

That said, it’s not a completely flawless process, just a cleaner one than the traditional method of sanding a floor. Historically, floor sanders leave quite a bit of dust and grit behind, forcing the homeowner to repeatedly clean and dust not only the room that was worked on, but also the rest of the house, since dust migrates.

But a dustless sander contains the worst of the mess and makes it easier to clean up what is left behind.
It’s important, for a variety of reasons, to eliminate dust where possible. Some wood dust, such as oak, is considered a carcinogen, making it even more critical that dustless sanding, or at least a thorough clean-up job, takes place after the work is done.

Sellens is not the only one offering this service, nor is his the only dustless sanding unit available on the market. “Other companies offer it, but as a premium to their basic service. I offer it as a standard.”

While other businesses might compete on price, Sellens’ philosophy is to compete on value. “When you race to the bottom line, you end up sacrificing skilled workers,” quality, and technique, he explains.

“What sets our service apart is the quality of the machine and our focus on customer service,” he adds. “Our goal is to leave the job site as clean as possible.”
